I’m not really into all that technical stuff,  so when I got my first pair of Diddybeats Headphones by Monster , I didn’t know what to expect or what to listen for.  No more than 30 seconds into Notorious B.I.G.’s “Hypnotize” (the first song I played using the Diddybeats ),I had to hand it to Diddy , Diddy’s new headphones was a work of art.

Karaoke, the evergreen hobby of people who think they sound like superstars… Over the past few years, karaoke has become increasingly popular, with the arrival of karaoke bars, pubs and now even home karaoke equipment (for the real enthusiasts). But where does karaoke come from and how did this phenomenon begin?

First, let’s have a look at the word, “karaoke”. Karaoke is a Japanese compound word. The “kara” part comes from “karappo”, which means empty, and the “oke” is a short form of “okesutura”, which we would translate into orchestra. Together this forms “empty orchestra” – a muddled way of describing a backing track, or a song with no lyrics.

As mentioned, karaoke is a Japanese word, and so it would make sense that karaoke was indeed invented by the Japanese somewhere between the 1970’s to 1980’s. It is believed that karaoke all began in a snack bar in Kobe City, Japan. The story goes along the lines of the snack bar owner recording backing racks as a backup for when the performing artist fell ill. The bar patrons would then give their singing a go on such occasions. Although it is almost impossible to verify, this is most commonly believed to have been the beginning of karaoke.

For the Japanese, karaoke is a very popular form of entertainment. Like, in the western world, it is quite common for friends to meet up for drinks after work, so is it common for the Japanese to meet up for karaoke (and some drinks of course) after a long day’s toil at the office. It is also very common for the Japanese to have karaoke parties.

Karaoke originally started out on tape cassette recordings with the lyrics printed out on paper. With the development of technology and video, the two elements could be combined into one. Karaoke has come a long way, technologically, and is now available on karaoke DVDs, gaming consoles and PC software.

It is quite amusing to consider that a worldwide industry has emerged from what was a clever pub owner’s “backup plan”.
